Baseball Battles To 13-8 Win Over Babson In NEWMAC Play

Luke Gabordi Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - April 2, 2009 - The Springfield College baseball team exploded for 13 runs as it ended its 10-game losing streak with a 13-8 win over Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.

With the win, the Pride now stand at 4-14, 1-2 in league action, while the Beavers drop to 10-8, 2-3.

Springfield, which scored 13 runs on just nine hits, took advantage of some Babson miscues as the visitors committed seven errors in the game. The Pride only scored in four innings, but used five runs in the third, third in the sixth, four in the seventh, and a single run in the eighth to score its most runs since it plated 15 against Roger Williams on March 14.

Luke Gabordi, Drew Michael, and John Procopio each had two hits on the day, while Jamie Mackie drove in a pair of Springfield runs.

For the Babson attack, Billy Besinger was outstanding, going 4-6 with two RBI, while Billy Miller went 2-4 with three RBI.

Teddy Kusiak picked up his first collegiate win on the mound as he threw 4.2 innings, giving up four earned runs off five hits. Brian Harris was effective in the final two innings as he allowed just one hit.

Michael O'Brien suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up six runs, four earned, off just five hits, while striking out five and walking three in five innings of work.

The Beavers opened the scoring in the second inning scoring as they scored four runs on three hits. Miller highlighted the inning as he crushed a two-run double for the visitors. Besinger also tacked on an RBI single in the frame as Babson jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

The Pride came right back in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs on three hits. Mackie singled in the first two runs for Springfield with a two out hit that got the rally started. With the bases loaded Gabordi hit into what should have been the final out, but instead turned into a bases clearing error by the 2nd basemen.

Babson rallied to tie the score in the top of the 5th with an RBI single off the bat of Besinger, scoring Peter O’Toole. Springfield took the lead for good in the top of the 6th inning as it plated three runs. Michael started the inning off right as he led off with a solo homer, crushing a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence, and chasing Babson starter, O'Brien.

In the seventh inning, Gabordi scored the first of a four runs after an infield single by Joe Rivera. SC added on three more in the stanza as it took advantage of another Babson error to grab a 12-5 lead.

The visitors didn't go away, adding three runs in the eighth on a pair of RBI doubles and a sac-fly. However, Harris came in to close the door on the game as the Pride picked up its first win since March 19.

Springfield returns to the diamond on Saturday afternoon when it travels for more conference action at WPI. The Pride and Engineers will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
