Women's Track and Field Breezes Past Competition In Six-Way Meet

Springfield, Mass. - February 6, 2010 -The Springfield College women's track and field team performed well in its final home meet of the season as it was victorious in a six-way meet on Saturday afternoon. The Pride put together an impressive victory, as it totaled 240 points, followed by Eastern Conn. State (106), Stevens Tech (49), AIC (46), Trinity (39), and Rutgers-Newark (21).

The Pride secured first, second, and third place finishes in the 55-meter dash. Nikki Hay crossed the line first in 7.45, just .03 ahead of teammate Laurie Jenkins who finished in 7.48 for second. Megan Libon earned a third place finish in 7.78.

Jenkins continued to dazzle when she cruised past the field in the 200-meters, finishing in 26.68. Crystal Davis notched a second place finish with a time of 27.34. Junior Joy Jennifer finished second in the 400-meters in 1:02.28.

Junior Lacey Cartier bested the field in the 600-meters, crossing the line in 1:40.48. The 1,000-meters saw Michelle Mirti race to a first place finish in 3:13.34. Sophomore Lindsey Eby took the 3,000-meter title finishing in a time of 11:22.09.

Bethany Young cruised past the competition in the 55-meter hurdles for a first place finish in 9.41. Both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams were also victorious on the afternoon.

In the field events, sophomore Fatima Rose had a tremendous afternoon as she grabbed a pair of victories. Fatima recorded a throw of 40-8 1/4 to capture the shot put title, and a throw of 52-11 1/2 to secure a victory in the weight throw. Rose's distance in the weight throw also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships as she currently has the ninth-farthest throw in the country.

Hay dominated the field in the long jump with a leap of 17-3 1/2 for first place honors.

The Pride will return to action next Saturday when it travels to Boston, Mass. for the Valentine’s Invitational.
