Baseball Shocks No. 4 Eastern Conn., 8-7

MANSFIELD, Conn., April 16, 2004 -- Junior shortstop Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) highlighted a five-run first inning with a three-run home run as Springfield College snapped a six-game losing streak at the hands of the Warriors with an 8-7 win Friday afternoon at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.

Springfield (5-8) never trailed in the game but weathered a four-run Eastern (18-6) third inning and hung on as the Warriors whittled a four-run deficit to one with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Junior centerfielder Anthony Gorneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) reached safely four times with three hits and walk and scored two runs. Gorneault singled and scored in the first and fifth innings.

The Pride defeated Eastern for the first time since 1996. Ranked No. 4 nationally in Division III, Eastern lost for the first time following 10 northern wins and for the first time after six home victories.

SC took a 5-0 lead in the first on junior first baseman John Beattie's (Longmeadow, Mass.) two-run single and Basteri's three-run home run to right before Eastern got four back in the third on four hits, highlighted by Galemba's grand slam over the left field fence.

After Eastern junior DH Leon Galemba hit a grand slam in the third to pull the Warriors to within one, 5-4, Springfield built a four-run lead by scoring three runs on sacrifice flies by junior DH Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) and sophomore catcher Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) and a throwing error on a botched pickoff attempt at second base.

Trailing 8-4, Eastern got two back in the sixth on a leadoff home run by sophomore third baseman Marc Garofalo and a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Tom Koch. Eastern cut the gap to 8-7 with one out in the seventh when Garofalo drove in senior righrfielder Dwight Wildman with a single but left the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position when successive batters grounded back to the box.
