SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 11, 2006 – Although MIT’s Julia Zimmerman captured the all-around, it was the Springfield College women’s gymnastics team that defeated their counterparts from MIT, 179.375 to 173.175, tonight in a meet that took place at Springfield’s Blake Arena.
It was the opening meet of the season for both teams. Thus, Springfield becomes 1-0, while MIT falls to 0-1.
The Springfield women captured all four events – including vault, uneven parallel bars, floor exercise, and balance beam -- en route to the victory. In the vault, SC won by a score of 46.725 to MIT’s 43.600. In the bars, it was SC, 43.375 to 40.950. In the floor exercise, it was SC 46.375 to 44.900. And in the balance beam, it was SC 42.900 to 43.725.
Winning the vault was Springfield’s Jillian Silverman, a junior from Ipswich, Mass., with a score of 9.475. She also placed third in the uneven parallel bars (8.900), and sixth in the balance beam (8.675).
Winning the uneven parallel bars was the Pride’s Kristin Fairburn, a freshman from Salem, N.H., with a score of 9.025.
Winning the floor exercise was Springfield sophomore Kerry McGowan (East Lyme, Conn.) with a score of 9.500.
And winning the balance beam was MIT’s Zimmerman, a freshman from Chicago, Ill. with a score of 9.150. Zimmerman also took the all-around with a score of 35.500.INDIVIDUAL SCORES
