Swimming and Diving Set to Begin 2008-2009 Campaign on Wednesday

John Taffe Springfield, Mass. - October 20, 2008 - On Wednesday evening, the Springfield College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will kick off its 2008-2009 campaign as they welcomes Division I-foe Holy Cross to the Art Linkletter Natatorium at 6:00 pm.

Last season, for the eighth-straight year, the women's squad claimed the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic onference Championship last season. With the return of two-time NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year, Moira Price, and a talented group of returners, the ninth title looks to be within reach for the Pride. Price, who finished third in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships last season, is arguably the best swimmer in program history.

Head Coach John Taffe, who enters his 20th year at Springfield College, will begin this season as a six-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year.

Senior Kallie Pottle and sophomore Aimee Doe look to join Price to power the Pride towards another successful season. On the diving boards, Head Coach Pete Avdolous will look to junior Michelle Reggio to lead the way after participating in the NCAA Championships last year.

On the men's side, anytime a program graduates an Olympic and Paralympic qualifier as well as the NEWMAC Diver of the Year, it’s a fair assumption that the level of success will level out. That does not appear to be the case for the Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team in 2009.

Coming off a 14th place finish at the NCAA Championships last spring, the Pride are loaded with returners who have experience at the national level and are poised to remain in the upper tier of programs in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

Springfield will be paced by returning All-Americans in seniors Greg Pearsall and Anthony Bruno as well as junior Matt Manoni.

Also looking to continue to impress will be sophomore Brian Sobol, who was named an alternate in the diving competition at the NCAA Championships last year.
