Baseball Takes First Step In NEWMAC Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 22, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) snapped an 8-8 tie with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to catapult the fifth-seeded Pride past MIT, the No. 4 seed, 10-8, in the opening round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament on Thursday.

The Pride extended its winning streak to seven games, its longest since it won eight-in-a-row in 1999. SC advances to Saturday’s second round, and faces top-seed and tournament-host Wheaton at 11 a.m. The Lyons swept the Pride, 3-2 in 10 inning and 10-0, earlier this season.

Sophomore right-hander Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) hurled one inning of scoreless relief to save his fourth game in four straight appearances. Junior Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) collected three hits and drove in two runs. Junior Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) had three RBI and two hits.

SC scored three times in the fifth, sparked by an RBI double by Judge and BaSteri’s run-scoring triple, to erase a 4-2 deficit and take a 5-4 lead. The Pride added three more in the seventh as Basteri opened the frame by ripping his fourth home run. Trailing 8-4, The Engineers responded by scoring four times in the eighth to even the score, setting up for Miner’s game-winning long ball with one out in the ninth.

Samolewicz got out of jam in the ninth. With two on and one out, he induced an game-ending double play.
