Cortland Topples Wrestling, 29-6

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 8, 2008) – The Springfield College wrestling team managed to win just two of 10 individual bouts, falling well short in a dual meet versus the nation’s #9-ranked Division III team, Cortland State, 29-6, this afternoon at Springfield’s Blake Arena.

Winners for Springfield College included senior quad-captain Erik Delehanty (Clinton, Conn.) at 157, and junior Chris Brown (East Hartford, Conn.) at heavyweight.

With the win, Cortland is now 2-0, while Springfield falls to 1-2. Cortland is wrestling Williams College at Springfield College later this afternoon.

The match began at the 184-pound weight classification. Cortland won the first two individual bouts before Brown defeated sophomore Joe Murphy (St. James, N.Y.) by a score of 3-2. The Red Dragons then won the next four matches, upping their lead to 23-3, before Delehanty defeated sophomore Will Brodfuehrer (Canastota, N.Y.), 8-5. Cortland then finished up with two more wins. There was only one pin on the afternoon, that coming at the 141-pound weight class as freshman Michael Esteves (Pleasantville, N.Y.) toppled James Squires (Melrose, Mass.) at 2:30 of the match. Squires was wrestling up a weight.
