Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision at Western

DANBURY, Conn., September 27, 2005 - Springfield College senior back Courtney Goetz (Flemington, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season in the seventh minute of action to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage, but it was Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) that went on to score two unanswered goals, one of which came in overtime, as the Colonials defeated the Pride on Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Just six minutes and 34 seconds into the match, Goetz lofted a shot from 45 yards out over the head of Western keeper Ashley Griffin for the score. SC held onto the 1-0 lead until the 54th minute of play when Western's Jessica Gomes netted her first of two scores off a feed from Kim Crayco.

In the end it was the Crayco to Gomes combination that lifted Western (7-1-1) over SC, 2-1, in the fifth minute of overtime (94:16). In the Pride's nine matches this season, in which it has gone 3-4-2, SC has already gone to overtime in four of those contests.

Pride sophomore keeper Amanda Petri (East Granby, Conn.) played well in goal for SC, saving 13 Colonial shots during the match.

The Pride will next travel to Wellesley College for its second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this Saturday, October 1, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
