SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- May 15, 2008 – The first day of the ECAC Division III Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships at Springfield College's Blake Track is complete. Weather conditions went from overcast to sunny in the afternoon, and then remained pleasant and cool through the evening. The women's hammer did not finish until 9:30 pm.
Here are the team scores through five events. Please note that complete results have been posted above in this space and individual champions have been posted below.

Among individuals, five champions were crowned.
The first 10 points of the meet were provided by Greg Tao of MIT in the pole vault. He leaped 4.70 meters or 15 feet, 5 inches. That was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Kyle O'Brien of Cortland State captured the 3000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:10.95. Richard McNeil of Bates won the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 56.12 meters (184-1). Drew Soltysiak of Westfield State provided some local excitement by winning the javelin with an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 59.74 meters (196-0). And finally, Dan Ramsey of St. Lawrence had one of the more outstanding performances of the day in the 10,000 meters with his NCAA provisional qualifying time of 30:34.44 -- an ECAC Division III Meet and Blake Track record. Both marks had been previously held by Nick End of Carnegie Mellon at 31:08.05 set in this meet in 2005.
The following includes all the Decathlon results through Day One. Senior Nathan Scott of Tufts, seeded 13th, is the Day One leader with 3370 points.

From a Springfield College point of view, sophomore Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.), seeded second, finished first in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10.72. The finals will be held on Saturday at 12:30 pm. In events that had finals today, senior John Lewis (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.13 meters (167-9). He provided Springfeld's three points.

Friday's events will start with the decathlon high hurdles and the heptathlon long jump at 10:00 am. The last scheduled event is the 4x400 women's relay at 4:20 pm.
