No. 12 Field Hockey Defeats Connecticut College, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sept. 20, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore forward Kim Stevens (North Knox, Maine) converted a penalty stroke with 7:16 remaining in the match to lead the No. 12 ranked Pride to the 3-2 win over Connecticut College in field hockey action on Benedum Field this afternoon.

Springfield junior back Maylese Leyva (Harwich, Mass.) put the Pride (4-2) on the board 11:12 into the game, before Connecticut (1-1) junior forward Emily Huffman (Oklahoma City, Okla.) tied the score 4:54 later as the two teams played to a 1-1 halftime deadlock.

Pride sophomore midfielder Lydia Grant (Granby, Conn.) put SC on top 2:30 into the second half on an assist from sophomore back Jen Durgin (Gorham, Maine), before the Camels again tied the score on a tally by senior midfielder Eleni Kotsonis (Louisville, Ky.) and an assist by Huffman 4:53 later.

Stevens, SC’s leading scorer, netted the game-winner to keep the Pride perfect at home this year with a 4-0 record, and broke a two-game losing skid after opening the season 3-0.

Springfield goalkeeper Lindsay Pardue (Houston, Texas) and Connecticut goalkeeper Ashley Kenerson (Wenham, Mass.) were each credited with six saves for the match.

Springfield is ranked No. 12 in the latest (Sept. 17) National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll.
