Lisowski and Hingston Power Baseball Past Clark, 13-1, In NEWMAC Tournament Second Round

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – April 24, 2008 -- Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, Mass.) pitched a complete game six hitter, while teammate Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) went 5 for 5 with four RBI to lead the Springfield College baseball team to a crucial 13-1 victory over Clark in the second round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) post-season tournament.

With the win, the Pride staves off elimination and improves to 15-19 on the season. The Pride will now travel to take on top-seeded Babson at 12:45 pm on Saturday. Clark drops to 11-21 this year.

Lisowski was sensational as he tossed all nine innings, allowing just six hits and no earned runs. The lefty struck out 10 batters in the contest while walking just one.

After a perfect hit and run to put runners on the corners for Clark in the second inning, Lisowski worked his way out of a jam to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard. The junior southpaw struck out Cole Osburn swinging and then, after Jaime Mackie (Springfield, Mass.) went deep into the hole at short on a grounder by Benjamin Seel, got a force out at second to end the inning.

Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) led off the bottom of the second with a walk. The Pride then executed a hit and run off Hingston’s single to put runners on the corners with no outs. However, Springfield was unable to capitalize as, on an attempted squeeze play, Tim Romeo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) popped out to the catcher on a bunt. Clark’s catcher, Joe Silva, then threw over to third to tag out Federico to end the threat.

The Pride scored the first run of game in the bottom of the third, when a fielder’s choice by Mackie plated John Schmaltz (Cromwell, Conn.), who originally reached after he cracked a triple down the right field line. Luke Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) then singled after a foul out, and Federico plated Mackie on an RBI single to left field. Hingston then belted a three-run shot to left center field to give the Pride a 5-0 advantage after three innings of play. Springfield blew open the game in the fourth with its second-consecutive five run inning. With two outs in the fourth, the Pride put together three straight singles to tack on another run. This time, Gabordi’s single into left field plated Schmaltz, and put runners on the corners. On the next pitch, a wild pitch allowed Mackie to cross the plate, while Gabordi used heads up base running to move to third. After Justin Nussey (Westminster, Mass.) drew a walk, Federico cracked a double to right center to score both Gabordi and Nussey, making it a 9-0 ball game. Hingston added an RBI single to right field to score Federico for the final run of the stanza.

In the fifth, Gabordi picked up his second RBI of the day as his single once again plated Schmaltz.

Clark got on the board for its lone run in the eighth inning, as Steve DeMartino scored on a throwing error by the Pride after Kevin Kopec slapped a double down the right field line.

SC added the final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the eighth as Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass.) crushed a two-RBI triple to dead center to increase Springfield’s lead to 12.

The Pride finished with 17 hits in the game, led by Hingston’s 5 for 5 performance. Schmaltz finished going 4 for 5 with three runs scored, while Federico added three runs scored and three RBI.

Scott Hollingsworth was the lone Cougar to have a pair of hits in the contest. Greg Long suffered the loss as he lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing 10 earned runs off 10 hits.
