Men's Lacrosse Handles Wheaton, 14-3, In Pilgrim Opener

Norton, Mass. - March 28, 2009 - In a rematch of last year's Pilgrim League Tournament title game, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 14-3 win against Wheaton in the Lyons' home opener on Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons fell to 0-5 on the season, while the defending champion Pride evened its record at 3-3 in both squad's Pilgrim League opener.

Springfield came out of the gates fast with the first of eight straight goals just 52 seconds in, as freshman Mike Delia recorded an unassisted tally. Senior Jake Beebe, who paced Springfield with three goals and a trio of assists on the day, found the back of the net twice to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage after one.

Five different Pride players scored in the second quarter, including netting three goals in a 55-second span, for a commanding 8-0 halftime advantage. Sophomore Ben Cederberg got Wheaton on the board eight seconds into the third period, but Springfield responded with six unanswered goals in the quarter to put the game out of reach. Beebe turned in a goal and three assists in the stretch, while junior Joe Heney scored twice with one helper.

Lyon freshman Billy McNamara tallied twice to begin the fourth period, recording his sixth and seventh goals of the season. Junior goalies Schuyler Horn and Alex Lewis split time with five saves apiece, with Horn suffering the loss.

Heney finished with three goals and two assists for the Pride, Delia tallied twice, and sophomore Mark Eaton added a goal and a helper. Springfield used three goalies, with senior Tom Albano turning aside 11 shots in just over 40 minutes to earn the win, while junior Matt Cipolla, who had eight saves in relief, saw a flurry of shots in 11:36 of action.

The Pride return to action on Wednesday as it travels to take on Bowdoin in a game that will be played at Exeter High School in New Hampshire .
