NCAA Gameday Central: Men's Lacrosse Heads to Cortland State For NCAA Battle

Tom Albano Springfield, Mass. - May 8, 2009 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team will hit the road on Friday afternoon, traveling to Cortland, N.Y. for an NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament contest against the Cortland State Red Dragons.

Last Time Out
Behind a record-setting performance Jake Beebe, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team throttled visiting Mount Ida, 21-4, in an NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament First Round Game on Wednesday evening. Springfield dominated nearly every statistical category -- as it outshot the visitors, 72-34; winning the ground ball battle, 55-28; winning 18-of-27 face-offs, and going 21-for-23 on clear attempts. The goals came fast and furious for the Pride in the opening stanza as it netted seven goals in a 7:04 span to take complete control.

The Series:
Cortland leads the all-time series, 13-5. In last season’s meeting, with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team held an 8-6 advantage but couldn't hold on as the Cortland Red Dragons, the eventual national-runner up, rallied to a 12-9 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tom Albano was absolutely outstanding as he finished with 20 stops. Joe Heney, Kyle Gable, and Jake Beebe all tallied three points in the loss.

A Performance For the Ages:
In the win over Mount Ida, Beebe, a the senior attackman broke an 18-year old NCAA Tournament record for points in a game. Beebe poured in seven goals and five assists for a record-breaking total of 12 points. The previous mark was held by Rich Franz of Ohio Wesleyan, who tallied 11 points in 1991 for Ohio Wesleyan in a win over Washington & Lee. Beebe had flirted with Franz's record last season in the first round when he registered 10 points in a 17-2 win over Kean University.

Racking up the Hardward:
Both Beebe and Mike Delia have received numerous awards over the past week. Beebe was named the Pilgrim Lacrosse League’s Player of the Year, while Delia earned Rookie of the Year honors. The duo was also honored at Springfield College’s Sports Recognition Night last Sunday. Beebe was tabbed top male senior team athlete, while Delia was named the top male freshman team athlete.

The Great Eight:
Beebe was named the Pilgrim Lacrosse League’s Player of the Year after leading Springfield to the NCAA Tournament this season as Pilgrim League Champions. Beebe was in fact one of seven members of the Pride to named to the All-Conference First Team. Joining Beebe was defenders Mike Smith and Sam Burrell, midfielders Jake Jones and Delia, goalie Tom Albano, and longstick midfielder Pete Sessa. Chris Jez was selected to the all-conference second team.

Coming out of the Gate:
Springfield has made a habit of getting out of the gate early this season. Springfield has outscored opponents 72-23 in the first quarter this season and 149-52 in the first half. In its last seven games in which Springfield has gone 6-1, SC has outscored opponents 50-6 in the first stanza and 87-14 in the first halves, averaging just over 12 goals in the opening half.
