Women's Volleyball Lands Four on AVCA Division III New England All-Region Team

Women's Volleyball All-Region Lexington, Ky. - November 14, 2013 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team had four student-athletes named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III New England All-Region Team.

Senior Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.), junior Whitney Miller (Cuba, N.Y.), sophomore Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.), and first-year Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) all earned the regional distinction. This marks the first time since 1996 that Springfield College had four student-athletes named to the AVCA All-Region team.

Williams College was the only other team from New England to have four representatives on the team.

Smolinski was the top vote getter of any player in the region, and took home the all-region honor for the third-straight season. The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Year has had another remarkable campaign, totaling a team-best 341 kills on a .310 clip. She leads the team with 304 digs and has added 27 aces and 27 blocks and reached a significant milestone this season, becoming just the fourth player in program history with 1,500 kills.

Miller has directed one of the most efficient offenses in the country this year and was one of two setters from the region honored. Miller has totaled 914 assists, averaging 9.14 per set, to go along with 174 digs, 36 blocks, and 19 aces. Under her leadership, the Pride is hitting .295 on the season, which is the second-highest total in all of Division III women's volleyball.

Just the fourth NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in program history, Holt burst onto the collegiate volleyball scene this year. The first-year tied for the most votes of any middle blocker in the region and has registered 294 kills at a sensational .371 clip. She has had just as big of an impact defensively, totaling 115 blocks and averaging 1.08 per set.

McGayhey had a breakout sophomore campaign for the Pride on the right side to earn her first-ever all-region accolade. This season, she has accounted for 243 kills while hitting .362, including 12 matches where she hit .500 or better, and ranks third on the team with 44 blocks.
