Springfield, Mass. - April 25, 2009 - The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team claimed the top seed in the upcoming Pilgrim Lacrosse League Tournament after winning the regular season crown by downing visiting MIT, 13-2, on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.

Springfield finished with an unblemished record in league play as it went 7-0, boosting its overall record to 9-6. MIT dropped to 7-7, 4-3 but still managed to qualify as one of the top teams in the upcoming tournament which starts on Wednesday.

The four-team field for the Pilgrim League Tournament is set with Babson and Wheaton making up the other two teams. However, seeding will not be decided until the Wheaton/Babson game is played on Sunday. Springfield will host a semifinal on Wednesday at a time to be determined.

Playing its second game in the last two days, the contest was never in doubt as Springfield opened up a 12-0 lead in the game. After a slow start, the Pride flexed its muscle in the final minutes of the opening period as it poured in three goals in the final 1:52. The first quarter spurt was capped off by a Jake Beebe strike with just one second remaining as the Pride led 5-0 after the first 15 minutes of play.

Things continued to roll in the second as Pat Cavanaugh scored the first of his four goals 47 seconds into frame. Joe Heney found the back of the net and Cavanaugh added another as the Pride went into the half up 8-0.

In the third, SC pumped in three goals in a 1:10 span, including tallies from Cavanaugh and Adam Ismaeil just 13 seconds apart, as it gained an 11-0 advantage. MIT finally got on the board with 2:01 left in the stanza as Neil Zimmerman tallied a man-up goal after his shot found the back of the net as Matt Cipolla couldn’t hang onto the ball after making the initial save. Zimmerman added another goal with 44 ticks left in the third to close out MIT’s scoring.

A goal from Mark Eaton in the fourth closed out the scoring for the contest.

SC held a 51-23 advantage in shots and was dominant on face-offs, winning 14-of-18. Sean Kerrigan finished with six ground balls, while Mike Delia and Ismaeil combined to go 10-14 from the “X”. Tom Albano played just under 39 minutes between the pipes, making seven saves and not allowing a goal.
