Women's Track and Field Hosts Springfield Invitational; SC 2nd Behind MIT; Hay Sets Triple Jump School Record

Springfield. Mass. -- April 18, 2009 -- The Springfeld College women's track & field team hosted the Springfield Invitational today under overcast skies at Blake Track. SC finished 2nd of 13 teams with 163 points behind MIT's 178.50.

Following Springfield, the remaining team scores were as follows: Wheaton 117, Westfield State 75, New Haven 71, Eastern Connecticut 35.50, Babson 31, Keene State and College of St. Rose 28, Colby-Sawyer 8, Fairfield 7, and Wellesley 5.

Kelsey Bishop continued to have a strong spring as she provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer with a toss of 50.88m. Fatima Rose also took first in the shot with a heave of 12.04m, which qualified her for ECAC's and Division III New England's. In the long jump, Cherelle Allen qualified for the New England Division III Championships, the ECAC Championships, and the All-New England Championships with a leap of 5.41m, good for third place on the day. Kayla Robertson also finished second in the high jump with a height of 1.60m.

As for Nikki Hay, the junior sensation won the triple jump with an NCAA Championship automatic qualifying distance of 12.20m (40-feet, 1/2 inch). A school record, that is the longest triple jump of the Division III outdoor season thus far. She also finished second in the 200 meter dash in 25.19, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships. She took second in the long jump (5.45m).

Lacey Cartier took second in the 800 in 2:21.00, while Amanda DiPaolo dominated the 5,000 meters in 17:48.33, winning by over a minute. With her time, DiPaolo qualified for the New England Division III Championships, the ECAC Championships, and the All-New England Championships.

SC's 4x100 relay of Nicole Reynolds, Kelly Murphy, Erika Marks, and Hay finished in second in 49.89.
