POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., February 21, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore opposite David Smietana (Buffalo, N.Y.) registered 16 kills on 26 swings with just one error for an impressive .577 hitting percentage as the No. 6 Pride downed Vassar College, 3-1, in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA)-Hay Division play on Tuesday night in Kenyon Hall.
Four members of the Pride recorded dougle-digit nights in kills as SC won the first (30-15), third (30-24) and fourth (30-22) games of the match to improve to 6-8 overall on the season and 4-1 in the EIVA-Hay. Sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) led all players with 22 kills, as he also added 11 digs in the affair.
Freshman outside hitter Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) totaled 19 kills in the win with just five errors on 37 swings for a .378 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker Andrew Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) had an impressive hitting night for the Pride, picking up 10 kills on 22 swings with no errors for a solid .455 hitting percentage, as the freshman also had a team-high four blocks. As a team, SC hit .346 to snap its six-game losing skid.
Sophomore setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) had a match-best 67 assists and 13 digs as he also chipped in with five kills and three blocks for a solid all-around performance in the Pride victory. SC will return to action this weekend as the Pride travels to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Friday, February 24, in a 7:00 p.m. match start.
