SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 3, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) led all players with 18 kills to go along with two blocks as the No. 6 Pride upended host Vassar College this evening, 3-0, in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA)-Hay Division play at Blake Arena.
Despite trailing for much of the opening game, SC responded, capturing the first period by a score of 32-30. The Pride won yet another close game, 30-25, in the second, and completed the sweep with a 30-22 victory in the third and final period. SC improves to 5-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in the EIVA-Hay, as the Brewers drop to 0-3 in their first EIVA-Hay match.
Freshman outside hitter Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) helped pace the Pride with 16 kills and a match-best 13 digs on the night. Freshman middle blocker Andrew Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) registered a team-best five blocks, and sophomore setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) added 44 assists.
For Vassar, senior outside hitter Matt Bninski led the way with 11 kills, four service aces, five digs and two blocks, as freshman outside hitter Scott Leserman chipped in with seven digs.
SC will next travel to East Stroudsburg for yet another EIVA-Hay Division match-up on Wednesday evening, February 8, in a 6:00 p.m. start.
