Women's Basketball Beats Wellesley, 74-62, Clinches Top Seed In NEWMAC Tourney

WELLESLEY, Mass., February 4, 2006 - Springfield College freshman center Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) netted a career-best 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds for a double-double as the Pride won its 10th consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at Wellesley College this afternoon, 74-62.

With the win, SC (16-5) has already clinched the top seed for the NEWMAC Tournament which begins on Tuesday, February 21. The Pride, which now sits at a perfect 10-0 in the conference with three league games left, clinched the top seed this afternoon with its win and Mount Holyoke's loss at Babson.

Senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) poured in a game-high 22 points to help lead SC to its 11th win in its past 12 tries. Also scoring in double figures for the Pride was sophomore guard Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) with 11 points.

SC opened the contest in commanding fashion, scoring the first 11 points en route to taking a 28-9 advantage early on. The Pride ended the opening stanza with a 15-point lead over the Blue, 36-21. Wellesley pulled to within six in the first five minutes of the second half before SC went on a 5-0 run to bring the lead back to double digits.

The Blue then responded with an 11-2 run to pull within two points, with just 8:05 left in the ballgame. Both teams traded buckets before Wellesley tied it at 58 apiece with 3:38 to go. The Pride responded, however, taking control of the final three minutes to end the game on a 16-4 and take its 10th NEWMAC win of the season, 74-62.

Wellesley (6-12, 4-6 NEWMAC) was led by senior Kristin Doeberl with 19 points and junior Sefi Adasi with a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds.

SC will next host Amherst College in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday evening, February 7, in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
