No. 13 Women's Basketball Surges Past West Conn., 58-53

DANBURY, Conn., November 29, 2005 - Springfield College senior center Erin Schwartz (Milford, Conn.) scored a team-best 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, compiled four assists, and recorded three blocks as the No. 13 Pride defeated Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), 58-53, in come-from-behind fashion on Tuesday evening, November 29, at the Feldman Arena.

The Colonials (1-3) jumped out on SC in the opening stanza, building a 14-point lead (27-13) with 5:29 remaining in the first half on a layup from Western's Mallory Stevens. The Pride (3-1) responded quickly, however, going on a 16-4 run to close the half down just two points, at 31-29.

The two teams battled evenly throughout most of the second half, but with 9:14 to go in the game, a layup by Schwartz gave the Pride a 44-43 lead in which it would never again relinquish for the rest of the contest. SC gained its largest lead of the game with 3:59 to go in the second stanza on two made free throws from senior forward Katie Trice (Concord, N.H.), putting the Pride up 54-48. SC held on for the 58-53 win, improving its overall record to 3-1 on the season.

Senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, as Trice added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds in the victory. Western Connecticut's Jennifer Kancler led all scorers in the game with 17 points off the bench for the Colonials.

Next up for the Pride will be the Pioneer Valley Classic, as SC will take on the host school, Westfield State, on Friday evening, December 2 in a 6:00 p.m. start. The Pride will then face WNEC on Saturday (Dec. 3) at Westfield State in a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
