Women's Basketball Downs MIT, 67-55, As Parvin Nets 1,000th

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 21, 2006 – Springfield College senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double as the Pride remained undefeated in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a 67-55 win over MIT this afternoon in Blake Arena.

SC (12-5, 6-0 NEWMAC) came out of the gates firing, as the Pride opened the contest with a 13-0 run. With 8:40 left in the opening stanza, Parvin scored her 1,000th career point at SC on a short jumper that gave the Pride a 24-17 lead at the time. The senior co-captain becomes just the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, as she has already moved into ninth all-time with 1,012 for her career.

MIT (5-10, 0-5 NEWMAC) responded after the slow start, however, going on a 24-11 run throughout the middle of the first half to tie the game at 24 apiece with 3:48 left. The Engineers took a 30-28 advantage into the break, led by junior guard Michal Ruchelsman, who scored eight first half points off the bench.

SC regrouped after the intermission, starting the second half much like it did the first, going on a 15-0 run to take a 43-30 lead with 14:57 left in the ballgame capped by a lay-up from freshman center Lauren O’Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.). In the game, O’Connor collected a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Pride would never relinquish its lead again in the contest, pulling away for the 12-point victory. Sophomore guards Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) and Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) were both in double figures for SC, with 16 and 10, respectively.

The Engineers were led by Ruchelsman and junior forward Cherelle Walls, with 11 points apiece off the bench. Freshman guard Clara Yuan broke MIT’s single season mark for three-point field goals this afternoon, netting two for a total of 34 on the year.

The Pride has now won six-straight conference games and seven of its past eight overall. SC will next host Smith College in another league contest on Tuesday evening, January 24, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
