SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 2, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore pitcher Joe Carlos (Wilbraham, Mass.) threw six and 1/3 innings, giving up just two runs, but the Pride fell to Wheaton College, 2-1, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
Carlos gave up just two runs to the Lyons (12-6, 3-1 NEWMAC) on seven hits before giving way to senior reliever Jon Davis (Ludlow, Mass.). Davis took over in the seventh and shut the Lyons down, allowing no hits and striking out three of the seven batters he faced.
The Pride (7-9, 2-2 NEWMAC) got out to an early, 1-0, lead in the first as designated hitter Jeff Hewes (Groton, Conn.) drove in leadoff hitter Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Wheaton came back to score one run in the top of the second inning as designated hitter Mark Baumer singled to score center fielder Pat O’Connor and tie the game at one run apiece.
In the top of the fourth inning, Baumer doubled to score O’Connor to give the Lyons a 2-1 advantage. This run proved to be the game winner, as Wheaton handed SC its fifth-straight loss. Wheaton starter Louie Bernardini (2-1) pitched eight solid innings to earn the win while Jamie Baker received credit for his third save for the Lyons. Bernardini scattered just five hits and forced the Pride to strand nine runners.
SC travels to Westfield State College tomorrow afternoon, April 3, for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
