SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 16, 2006 – Springfield College senior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) recorded a team-best 11 kills and three blocks to go along with four service aces and one dig as the Pride swept visiting Wheaton College, 3-0, this afternoon in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Blake Arena.
The win moves SC to 9-1 overall on the 2006 season and a perfect 2-0 in conference action. The Lyons fall to 1-9 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
The Pride was led by senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.), the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week, as the tri-captain totaled 16 digs in the victory. Junior Kara Ramos (Milford, Conn.) was second in the digs department for SC with 10.
Senior outside hitter Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.) had a solid match with nine kills and just two errors on 22 swings for a .318 hitting percentage. Curtin also chipped in with four digs and three service aces. Sophomore setter Caitlin Mulroy (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered 28 assists, seven digs, and four service aces on the afternoon, while junior setter Alyssa Muething (Plainsboro, N.J.) had a team-high five service aces in the win.
SC will look to make it three in a row in NEWMAC action as it next hosts conference foe, Smith College, on Tuesday evening, September 19th, in a 7:00 p.m. start in Blake Arena.
