Women's Lacrosse Caps Perfect NEWMAC Regular-Season with 12-5 Win at Mount Holyoke College

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass., April 22, 2006 – In the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season finale for both teams, Springfield College junior attacker Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) paced the Pride with five goals and three assists as SC downed Mount Holyoke College, 12-5, this afternoon in South Hadley, Mass.

The Pride improves to 9-4 overall, finishing its conference regular-season in perfect fashing, with a 6-0 mark. The Lyons of Mount Holyoke College drop to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.

SC took control early, scoring the game’s first five goals. Mount Holyoke answered back with two goals, but that was as close as the Lyons would come for the remainder of the contest. The Pride finished the half strong, netting three more goals, two of which came from Lampros’ stick. Lampros finished the first half with four goals to her name. In the second half of play, the Lyons were unable to close the gap, limited to only two goals. SC scored five second-half goals to seal the victory.

In addition to Lampros’ five goals, junior attacker Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) tallied a hat trick for SC. Freshman attack Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished the game with two goals and two ground balls. Defensively, senior Christine Nicol (Farmington, Conn.) picked up a team-high five caused turnovers. In goal, sophomore Kristin Vacarro (Southington, Conn.) put aside 10 Mount Holyoke shots and limited the Lyons to just five goals in 60 minutes of regulation.

Five different Lyon players notched goals for Mount Holyoke. The conference’s leading scorer, Caitlin Taylor, was held scoreless in today’s match-up, but totaled two assists. Defensively, Lisa Roberts forced a game-high seven opponent turnovers and picked up four ground balls. In goal, senior Lauren Mulcahy made nine saves and allowed all 12 of the Pride’s goals.

With the perfect 6-0 regular-season record in the NEWMAC, SC will have the honor of hosting the NEWMAC Tournament. The Pride will next host Plymouth State University on Tuesday evening, April 25th, in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference start at Benedum Field before beginning NEWMAC Tournament play. The post-season tourney will go from Thursday, April 27th, to Sunday, April 30th, with times and opponents to be announced.
