Women's Track and Field Finishes Second at NEWMAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 29, 2006 – The Springfield College women’s track & field team finished 2nd of 8 teams today at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships at MIT. The Springfield men’s team finished 3rd of 6 teams competing in the same meet.

On the women’s side, Wheaton captured the title by scoring 211.50 points, followed by the Pride with 155.50, host MIT 141, Smith 84, Coast Guard 72, WPI 63, Mount Holyoke 47, and Babson 4.

On the men’s side, MIT won the title by scoring 214.50 points, followed by Coast Guard 178, Springfield 166.50, Wheaton 123, WPI 71, and Babson 17.

SC had three women win individual events, plus one relay team. The individual winners included freshman Silvienne Krosendijk (Seroe Biento, Aruba) in the long jump with a NEWMAC-record leap of 18-11 ; grad student Sarah Martin (Madison, N.H.) in the triple jump with a leap of 36-3 ; and freshman Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.) in the hammer throw with a toss of 160-10.

The 4x100 meter relay team from SC also finished first with a time of 49.90. That team included freshman Vanessa Ricketts (Greenfield, Mass.), senior Yasmin Goris (Worcester, Mass.), Martin, and Krosendijk.

All the above were named First Team All-NEWMAC.

By finishing second, the following were named Second-Team All-Conference. That included Goris in the 100-meter dash at 12.35 seconds, freshman Kayla Robertson (Peace Dale, R.I.) in the high jump at 5-feet even, and junior Adrienne Sayward (Salem, N.H.) in the javelin at 124-11.

Just missing out on all-conference honors by finishing third were Ricketts in the 100-meter dash at 12.70, Martin in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.62, senior co-captain Alisha Miner (Sanbornton, N.H.) in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:07.22, Ricketts in the long jump at 16-7 , and the 4x400-meter relay team of senior Jessica Zaccaro (Washingtonville, N.Y.), freshman Katie Parente (Torrington, Conn.), Miner, and freshman Eva Gibson-Mueller (Ipswich, Mass.) at 4:08.92.

As for the men, two finished first in the competition, thus becoming First Team All-NEWMAC performers. They included junior Dave Forrette (Chicopee, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.58, and sophomore Nick DeCelle (Mechanicville, N.Y.) in the triple jump with a leap of 43-4 .

The following SC men finished in second place, thus becoming Second Team All-NEWMAC. They were freshman Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.94, junior Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.) in the shot put with a toss of 52-0 , sophomore John Lewis (Fitchburg, Mass.) in the discus with a toss of 147-8 (just 2 inches shy of the champion), Lewis again in the hammer with a toss of 155-5, and junior Cameron Turchetti (South Deerfield, Mass.) in the javelin at 180-5.

Finishing in third place for the SC men were senior tri-captain Rashaad Roach (East Haven, Conn.) in the 100-meter dash at 11.29, senior tri-captain Chris Keyser (West Newbury, Mass.) in the 200-meter dash at 23.12, sophomore Tim Rehm (Waldrick, N.J.) in the 400-meter dash at 50.86, junior Patrick Gann (Guilford, Conn.) in the 800-meter run at 1:58.17, sophomore Joe Dubuc (South Hadley, Mass.) in the 110-meter high hurdles at 15.88, and Kampersal in the discus with a toss of 139-2.

Many members of both the Springfield men’s and women’s track & field teams will be able to compete at Springfield College’s own Blake Field next Thursday-Friday-Saturday, May 4-6, in the New England Division III Championships.

On Thursday-Friday, May 18-19, the same venue will be the site of the ECAC Division III Track & Field Championships for both the men and women.
