No. 25 Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision At WNEC

Jen Jahoda Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- September 10, 2008 -- Freshman midfielder Jen Jahoda (Lebanon, Conn.) scored the game’s first goal for Springfield College, but the Golden Bears of Western New England College tallied the next two and held on to win a women’s soccer match at WNEC’s Suprenant Field Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, WNEC raised its record to 1-3, winning its first of the season, while Springfield fell to 2-1, losing its first of the season. The Pride had been ranked 25th in the nation, and fourth in the New England region just yesterday.

The Golden Bears had scored just one goal in its first three games. They then found themselves trailing 1-0 when Jahoda took a pretty feed from senior defender Kayla Thibeault (Lebanon, Conn.) 15:03 into the game.

The lead, however, was short-lived. WNEC then scored two first-half goals by sophomore forward Heather Mortell (Webster, Mass.), at the 17:40 and 31:11 marks.

The 2-1 halftime lead held up for the Golden Bears.

Covino helped maintain the lead with seven stops in the opening half.

The Pride applied constant pressure after the break, but the Golden Bear’s defenders were able to clear the ball on several occasions.

Covino made a nice save on a shot by Thibeault with five minutes remaining as the two players collided in front of the net. Covino suffered a cut on her forehead, but stayed in the match after a delay of almost 10 minutes. She then stopped shot by Thibeault at the 2:17 mark.

Springfield mounted one last attack, but missed a couple of quick, back-to-back shots with 30 seconds left. The Pride had a 25-6 advantage in shots.
