Amherst, Mass. (September 6, 2008) – Junior Amanda DiPaolo (Garrison, N.Y.) paced the Pride as she took 1st place out of 75 runners to lead the Springfield College women’s cross country team as they opened the season with an outstanding showing at the 2008 Amherst Invitational held at Amherst College on Saturday afternoon.
The women placed second out of six teams with 45 points, while Amherst, ranked #1 in the nation in Division III, won the event with 43 points. In third place following Springfield was Wheaton with 85 points, followed by Smith College in fourth with 98 points. In fifth place was St. Anselm with 116, and in sixth placed Merrimack finished with 145 points.
DiPaolo led the Pride in its impressive showing with her time of 20:17.4. She was followed closely by teammate Caitlin Crosby (Yarmouthport, Mass.) who took third with a time of 20:42.4.
Sophomore Lacey Cartier (York, Maine) finished with a time of 20:50.5 and placed eighth in the event, while Kristyn Meade (Raynham, Mass) finished with a time of 21:25.4 and took 20th place, and freshman Lindsey Eby (Clifton Park, N.Y.) rounded out Springfield’s top five with a time of 21:36.2 and finished in 22nd place.
Springfield’s impressive race was fueled by the Pride’s top five runners finishing only 1:19 from each other. Also competing in the race was freshman Michelle Mirti (Pompton Plains, N.J.) (36th, 22:32.9), sophomore Kelley Murray (Cohoes, N.Y.) (40th, 22:46.9), and sophomore Tiffany Rozenas (Rochester, Mass.) (52nd, 23:41.9).
The women will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 13th) when they travel to Smith College in Northampton, Mass., where the men will also kick off their season at 11:00 am.
