Worcester, Mass. -- April 8, 2011 -- Amanda Novak's three-run home run to leftcenter field in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the big hit of the game as the Springfield College softball team defeated WPI, 5-1, in game #1 of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Pride then won game #2, 9-1, in six innings.
With the wins, Springfied is now 15-10 overall, 7-3 in the NEWMAC. WPI falls to 14-13 overall, 2-8 in the league.
Game #1 -- Springfield 5, WPI 1
Novak, a senior first baseman from Cos Cob, Conn. went 3-for-4 with three RBI's for the Pride. Sophomore shortstop Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.), added two hits, knocking one home.
Freshman righthander Jen Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) pitched a complete-game victory, and is now 7-2 on the season. She gave up the one run on five hits, striking out five while walking two. He did not give up the run until there were two outs in the seventh.
The starter for the Engineers was Allie Hardy. She gave up just two hits in three inings of work. She allowed one walk while striking out two. Christa Coscia turned out to be the losing pitcher (3-4), giving up all five runs in four innings. She walked one, striking out none.
The score was 0-0 entering the sixth inning, and the first two SC batters went down. But Tess Gagliano (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) walked and Blake singled, setting the stage for Novak. The senior did not disappoint as she belted her seventh home run of the year, giving SC a 3-0 lead. Breann Joyce (Trumbull, Conn.) and Joseph singled, and Chelsea Bender (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) then singled home pinch-runner Mackenzie O'Dea (Weymouth, Mass.) for the fourth run.
In the Pride seventh, Blake doubled home Kasey Kelly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) for the fifth run.
WPI scored its lone run with two outs in the last of the seventh on a single to right-center by Maddie Willer.
Game #2 -- Springfield 9, WPI 1 (6 innings)
In the nightcap, Springfield put up a trio of runs in the first inning. Melanie Scuderi (Clifton Park, N.Y.) slapped a double to bring in Novak and Tess Gagliano and later scored on an Engineer miscue for the 3-0 edge. The Pride tacked on another run in the second as O’Dea singled to center field to knock in the fourth run of the contest.
A solo home run blast by Gagliano pushed Springfield’s lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
In the bottom of the inning, WPI grabbed a run back. Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, Conn.) singled and was pinch run for by Katherine Goldberg (Plainville, Mass.) on the base paths. Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, Conn.) doubled and a ground out enabled Goldberg to get the Engineers on the board.
The Pride scored twice in the fifth for a 7-1 advantage as Kelsey Dunn (Waterbury, Conn.) hit a two-RBI single to center field with two outs.
In the sixth, O’Dea singled and Gagliano reached on an error and both crossed home plate on a double by Blake for a 9-1 Springfield lead.
For the visitors, O’Dea, Gagliano and Blake each notched a pair of hits in the second game, while Blake, Scuderi and Dunn each recorded two RBI.
Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y.) (6-6) scattered four hits over six innings and allowed only one run for the Pride.
Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.) took the loss (6-6) for the Engineers, surrendering seven earned runs on 10 hits and striking out five.
On the day, Juliana Fekete (Belgrade, Me.) and Willer each registered two hits for the Engineers.
Both teams host NEWMAC doubleheaders tomorrow beginning at noon. WPI wraps up a six-game homestand when Wellesley heads to Worcester, while Springfield entertains MIT.
