Brunswick, Maine - January 18, 2014 - Freshman Alex Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.) was a triple-event winner to lead the Springfield College men's track & field team on Saturday in a quad meet with host Bowdoin, MIT and WPI. The Pride finished third as a team.
MIT won the meet with 272.33 points, Bowdoin came in second with 111.83 points, Springfield in third with 107.83 points and WPI in fourth with 59 points.
Niemiec in his second collegiate meet put on a dominant performance. The freshman won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.01, won the long jump with a distance of 22-00.25 and the high jump with a height of 6-06. He was also runner up in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.
Niemiec was the only winner on the day for the Pride, but Springfield had several other top performances. Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) was runner up in the mile with a time of 4:20.69 and placed third in the 800-meter with a time of 2:03.81.
Brandon Hammerstrom (Auburn, N.H.) earned a third place finish in the shot put with a toss of 45-07.75. Brian Stacy (Belchertown, Mass.) was third in the triple jump with distance of 41-03.25 and Sam Baker (Durham, Conn.) placed third in the high jump with a height of 6-02.
Next Saturday the Pride will host Stevens, Trinity, RPI, Ramapo, Westfield State, ECSU, Worcester State, Assumption, AIC, and CCNY.
