Baseball Takes Down Elms, 4-2, In Clash Of Local Foes

Springfield, Mass. - March 31, 2010 - Behind the combined pitching of Ryan White and Mike Cole, the Springfield College baseball team got back on the winning track after defeating local-foe Elms College, 4-2, in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at SC's Berry-Allen Field.

The two pitchers gave up a total of five hits and two runs, both unearned, while striking out five and walking seven.

The win snaps the Pride's four-game slide as Springfield now improves to 7-8 on the year. Elms falls to 4-9 on the season.

The Pride was able to score first in this afternoon’s contest. In the bottom of the second, after plunking third baseman Mike Micik with the pitch, Elm’s pitcher John Russell gave up a single to Kyle DiFranco and a walk to Mike Corletta, With the bases loaded. Joe Kropa then lined a single into left field, plating two runners, and giving Springfield the early 2-0 lead.

After giving up three straight base hits, senior righthander White was able to regain his composure. Forcing the next batter to fly out to short right field, White then watched as the runner at third tagged and tried to score, but to no avail, Pete Calandra gunned down the runner. The next batter grounded weakly to Micik at third, and White was successfully at of the jam with no damage done.

Springfield tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth frame. After two straight batters, DiFranco and Corletta, reached safely due to errors in the infield. Kropa hit a weak ground ball to the first basemen who had no other play but to step on the bag while DiFranco crossed the plate. That made the score 3-0 in favor of the Pride.

The Pride tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning. John Schmaltz led off the inning with an opposite field double. Mike Sirani came in to pinch run for the rehabbing Schmaltz and advanced to third before Karl Quist hit a line drive to centerfield, deep enough to score the speedy Sirani. This put the Pride ahead by a score of 4-0.

The Blazers were able to finally put up two runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the ninth. Third baseman Brian Marrero led off the inning reaching on an error, eventually scoring on a walk by Donald Morse. Albert Betances who walked in the inning came around to score on a wild pitch.

Springfield will next hit the diamond on Thursday afternoon when it travels to Babson for an important NEWMAC conference contest. The single, nine-inning game begins at 3:30 pm.
