Alexa Carlson Box Score

Keene, N.H. - September 8, 2009 - The Springfield College field hockey team dropped its first game of the season on the road Tuesday evening when it fell to Keene State, 3-0. The loss brings the Pride's record to 2-1 this season.

Springfield, which entered the game ranked 19th in the country, battled Keene State in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament First Round contest. In that game, the Pride defeated the Owls at home, 1-0, to advance to the second round of the national tournament.

Tonight was a different story as Keene State took a 1-0 lead at the 29:47 mark of the first half. On their second corner opportunity of the game, senior Carly Benning deflected a shot by Erin Dallas into the net.

The Pride had a chance to tie the game with less than two minutes to play in the half, but KSC senior goalie Vikki Stoessel knocked away a close range shot by sophomore Alexa Carlson.

The Owls had a flurry in the closing seconds of play, but Springfield sophomore goalie Alison McCarthy was up the challenge, stopping both bids by Benning.

Senior Morgan Rein had an opportunity to get the equalizer for the Pride at the 20:53 mark of the second half when she broke in alone. Her shot was stopped by Stoessel, who came out of the net to break down her angle.

The Owls once again capitalized on a corner play to take a 2-0 lead midway in the half. Taking a crossing pass from senior Tara Murphy, Dallas fired a shot into open side of the net for her first goal of the season. Benning scored with 32 seconds to play to account for the final score.

The Owls had a 15-11 lead in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners. McCarthy finished with made eight saves in goal for Springfield on the night.

The Pride will return to action next Tuesday evening when its hosts Middlebury at 7:00 pm on Stagg Field. The Panthers entered the season ranked seventh in the country in the 2009 Kookaburra / NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll.
