In the first match of the night in Dana Gym, it was New Paltz winning 3-0 and by set scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 over the Owls of Westfield State.
In tonight's second round of action, Stevens Tech made it a completely miserable night for the Panthers of Plymouth State, coming all the way back to win in five sets in Dana Gym, 23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-8.
On Saturday, at 10 am, Springfield will meet Westfield State in Blake Arena, while New Paltz meets Stevens in Dana Gym. At 12:30 pm, Westfield State meets Stevens in Blake, while Plymouth State meets New Paltz in Dana. Finally, at 3 pm, Springfield takes on Stevens in Blake, while Plymouth State meets Westfield State in Dana Gym.
In the featured match of the night, in set #1, Springfield had numerous chances to take the lead, but it was finally Plymouth State winning, 30-28. In the second and third sets, Springfield was not seriously challenged.
In set #4, Springfield led 23-20, forcing a PSU timeout, but the Panthers won six of the next seven points to force a fifth game. In game #5, SC sped to a 6-1 lead, but the Panthers were not fazed, closing to within 8-7. SC captured six of the next nine points to lead 14-10, before winning the final set 15-11.
Lauren Torvi was dominant all evening as she produced 22 kills and four blocks versus Plymouth State before totaling 18 kills and two blocks against New Paltz. Whitney Miller directed the Pride's attack in the Plymouth State win with 38 assists while Molly Giannattasio delivered 43 assists against New Paltz.
Other highlights in the Plymouth State contest included Mary Consol's eight kills and six blocks, Tessa Smolinski's 13 kills and 12 digs, and Itza Nieves 15 digs.
In the sweep over New Paltz, the Pride pounded out 49 kills in three games. Smolinski posted 10 kills, Kim Giaquinto added nine kills, and Nieves chipped in 17 digs.
