Jared Slingerland Brewster, Mass. -- October 21, 2009 -- The Springfield College men's golf team competed at the 75th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships this past Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 19-20) at The Captains Golf Course on Cape Cod. The squad placed 34th of 39 schools (All Divisions), with SC freshman Ryne McEvoy finishing tied for 99th among individuals.

The NEIGA has been in existence since 1934 and includes 45 member colleges and universities in New England, making this the oldest and largest college golf tournament in the country. UConn won the tournament with a two-day score of 582. Central Connecticut State was the Division I runner-up, finishing second with a score of 588. AIC, placing sixth overall, was the Division II leader at 606. And in Division III, Salem State was first, and seventh overall, with a score of 609.

Among individuals, Jason Thresher of Bryant University, was the medalist with a 36-hole score of 73-68= 141.

Springfield finished with a score of 677 to finish 34th. The Pride shot 342 on Day I and 335 on Day II. McEvoy, a freshman from Accord, N.Y., shot 79-84 for a 163. Up next was junior Craig DiFranco (East Longmeadow, N.Y.) (T124th at 89-78=167).

Sophomore Jared Slingerland (Berwick, Me.) tied for 156th with an 87-86=173. Sophomore Alexander Brown (Portland, Me.) tied for 175th with rounds of 93-87=180. Senior J.R. Balogun (Springfield, Mass.) also tied for 175th with rounds of 87-93=180.
