Springfield, Mass. -- March 7, 2010 -- The Springfield College women's gymnastics team fell to Yale, but defeated Rhode Island College in a meet labeled "A Tumble for Teal" this afternoon at Blake Arena. Final team score was Yale 189.950, Springfield 182.600, RIC 159.625. It was the final regular-season home meet for six SC seniors with the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association women's gymnastics nationals still on the horizon in Blake Arena March 26-27.
After the meet, the following six senior members of the Pride were honored. They included Jeanna Bradle (New Milford, Conn.), Ericca Castagna (Topsfield, Mass.), Brittany Davis (Shelby, N.C.), Kayleigh Davis (Whitefield, N.H.), Audrey Lastra (New Milford, Conn.), and Lizzie Sartell (Narragansett, R.I.).
The meet, tabbed Tumble for Teal, was dedicated to help raise Gynecological Cancer Awareness. All donations made during the meet were made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Center and Team Maureen, a group founded in memory of SC gymnast Maureen Duffey ’91. For more information about Team Maureen visit www.myspace.com/teammaureen. Teal bracelets were on sale throughout the meet. The game programs were the color teal. And the SC team wore teal-colored uniforms for this one meet.
For Yale, senior Brigitte Kivisto (Boca Raton, Fla.) was simply outstanding, claiming first in the All-Around with a score of 38.975. Kivisto had two firsts and two seconds. She placed first in the balance beam (9.825) and the floor exercise (9.850), and seconds in the vault (9.675) and uneven bars (9.625).
Tara Feld, a freshman from Buffalo Grove, Ill., also had a great meet for the Bulldogs. Feld placed second in the All-Around with a tally of 37.950. She finished first in the vault (9.750), second in the floor exercise (9.750), and third in the uneven bars (9.575).
The other first place finish was captured by Yale freshman Lindsay Andsager (Naperville, Ill.) in the uneven bars (9.657).
For the home team, junior Christina Pagella (Westfield, Mass.) had a pair of top sixes -- in the vault (3rd at 9.500) and in the floor exercise (tied for fourth at 9.600). Others who did well for the Pride included sophomore Carly Flynn (Franklin, Mass.) and Bradle, who tied for fifth in the vault with scores of 9.350. In the uneven bars, sophomore Megan German (Spencer, Mass.) tied for fifth at 9.175. In the balance beam, the two Davises did well for SC. Kayleigh finished fourth at 9.475, while Brittany took fifth at 9.300. And finally in the floor exercise, Castagna placed tied for fourth at 9.600.
The second three all-around performers in today's meet were all from RIC. They were sophomore Alana Henderson (Alexandria, Va.), who was fourth at 34.600; senior Liz Glunt (Altoona, Pa.), fifth at 34.275; and sophomore Courtney Winsor (West Greenwich, R.I.), sixth at 33.350.
Up next for Springfield are the ECAC Division III Championships at Brockport Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14.
