Men's Soccer Tops Salve Regina, 2-0

Josh Severns Box Score

Springfield, Mass. -- September 7, 2008 -- Coming off a double-overtime tie on Saturday, the Springfield College men's soccer team controlled the game from the first whistle en route to a 2-0 win over Salve Regina on Sunday afternoon at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

The win improves the Pride to 1-0-1 on the year while the Seahawks fall to 0-2.

Springfield had its first great opportunity 13 minutes into the game when Eric Stalsburg (Old Saybrook, Conn.) slipped behind the Seahawk defense, only to have his shot find the crossbar. The Pride continued its pressure as on the ensuing play, Brett Drake’s (Enfield, Conn.) shot was tipped over the bar by Salve’s goalkeeper, Kurt Ginthwain.

The Pride got on the board at the 34:36 mark when Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.) netted his first collegiate goal. After Jeremy Scheer (Enfield, Conn.) was fouled 30 yards away from the goal, Scheer then took a free kick from the right side of the field. Scheer’s kick curved behind the Seahawk defense and found Severn, who headed home SC’s first goal just inside the near post, from six yards out.

Salve Regina nearly equalized the game with 18:25 remaining as Alex Clark’s shot from 20 yards out slammed off the cross bar. Jim Dean then followed up the deflection with a shot that Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, Conn.) made a point-blank save on.

After the ensuing corner kick, the Pride nearly completed its counter attack as John Plourd (Southampton, Mass.) found Stalsburg streaking down the right wing. Stalsburg placed a shot that appeared headed for the back of the net, only to glance off the far post.

The Pride added an insurance goal with just over two minutes left in regulation as Matt Montgomery (Colchester, Conn.) found Drake all alone on the back post. Drake made no mistake as he slipped it past Ginthwain for his first tally of the season.

Leahy posted his first career win and shutout as he made five saves in goal. The Pride outshot the Seahawks, 21-10, in the game.

Springfield will wrap up its three-game homestand on Wednesday evening when it hosts Keene State at 7:00 pm.
