Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Babson

Winter Haven, Fla. - March 22, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team opened up conference play in Winter Haven, Florida on Saturday, taking on Babson in a doubleheader.

The Pride dropped both games to the Beavers, falling 5-3 in the first game and 8-4 in the second. Springfield falls to 5-4 on the season and 0-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

Babson 5, Springfield 3:

In game one of the day, the Pride was led offensively by Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) both going 3-for-4 from the plate. Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4.

Babson got on the board early with two runs in the second inning, but the Pride had an answer in the top half of the third, tying the game up 2-2.

Hopkins led off the third with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a single from Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.). A single to left center from CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) got Springfield on the board, as Hopkins scored on the hit. Smith brought in the tying run on a single up the middle, scoring Calabrese for a 2-2 game.

Babson took a one-run advantage in the bottom half of the third as George Crowley had an RBI single to make it a 3-2 game. The Beavers added insurance runs in the fifth and the eighth to increase its lead to 5-2.

The Pride mounted a rally in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. Pinch hitter Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.), who led off the frame with a walk, was able to come around and score on after the Pride hit into a double play, and the game ended on the next at bat on a fly out to right.

Babson 8, Springfield 4:

In game two of the doubleheader, Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) led the Pride offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Springfield jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning on three RBI singles. Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) got things started with a lead-off single, then advanced to second on a passed ball. After two straight outs, Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.) singled home Smith to get the Pride on the board. Gower advanced to second base on the second passed ball of the inning and was hit home by Peterson for a 2-0 lead. Springfield went up 3-0 on an RBI single by Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.).

Babson answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 3-1 game, but Springfield had an answer in the third, tacking on one run on an RBI single from Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) that scored Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) for a 4-1 game. Babson scored a pair of runs in the third to make it a 4-3 game.

Babson took a 5-4 advantage in the fifth, with two runs off three hits, then went up 7-4 in the sixth with two more runs off a fielders choice and an RBI single. The Beavers tacked on one run in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-4 final.

Up next, Springfield will be on the road on Tuesday, heading to MIT for a 3:30 p.m. conference clash.
