No. 12 Field Hockey Falls To Keene State, 2-1

Jane Kelleher Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - September 9, 2008 - Despite scoring just 56 seconds into the game, the 12th-ranked Springfield College field hockey team fell to the visiting Keene State Owls, 2-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Stagg Field.

The loss drops the Pride to 2-1 on the season, while Keene State improves to 3-1.

Emily Murry (Boonton, N.J.) wasted no time as she took a feed from senior All-American Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) and found the back of the cage just 56 seconds into the game to give the home Pride a 1-0 advantage.

However, the Owls tied the game at one all when Jacki Benson finished off a pass from Carly Benning off a penalty corner with 25 minutes left in the opening stanza.

In the second half, the Pride poured on the pressure, registering 13 shots compared to just three for Keene State. However, the Owls goalie, Vikki Stoessel made eight saves in the stanza to keep Springfield off the board.

Benning eventually netted the game-winner to complete the Owls upset bid as she took a feed from Erin Dallas with 32:21 left in regulation.

Kelleanne Salazar (Granby, Conn.) made two saves in goal for Springfield as she faced just eight shots in the entire game. The Pride held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners, including eight in the second stanza.

The Pride return to action next Tuesday when it travels to take on No. 6 Middlebury at 4:00 pm.
