Softball Splits a Pair First Defeating McDaniel, Then Falling to Washington & Jefferson

Jaimie Moran Kissimmee, Fla. -- March 19, 2009 -- -- The Springfield College softball team split a pair of games on Thursday morning as it defeated McDaniel 6-4 before falling to Washington & Jefferson, 4-3.

As a result, Springfield is now 3-5 through 8 games played in the Rebel Games. In game #1, freshman Megan Fitzgerald (Troy, N.Y.) was the winning pitcher, hurling the final 3 1/3 innings to gain the victory. She allowed no runs on 3 hits, striking out 3 and walking 1. Junior Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.) had 3 hits and 1 RBI. In addition, senior first baseman Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.) and shortstop Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.) both went 2-for-4. Cassella added 2 RBI's.

Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Worrilow and Cassella knocked in the runs with doubles. McDaniel, however, tallied three times in the second, and once more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

But in the bottom of the fourth, senior OF Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) knocked in a run on a groundout to short. Then in the fifth, SC scored three more times. Cassella knocked in the first of those three with a sacrifice fly to center. The go-ahead run scored on a passed ball, and the final run was brought home on a single by junior OF Caitlin Corry (Seekonk, Mass.).

In game #2, sophomore Katie Anderson (Andover, Mass.) was the losing pitcher in going the distance. She allowed 4 runs, all earned, on 5 hits, while striking out 3, and walking 2

Washington & Jefferson scored one run each in the first and third innings. SC fought back with one in the top of the fourth. Cassella knocked in the run with a single to center.

In the bottom of the fourth, W&J scored two more to take seeming control of the game, only to have the Pride storm right back with two of its own in the top of the fifth. With two outs, senior third baseman Shanda Kogut (Preston, Conn.) managed an infield single. Kogut stole second, and then scored on a 3-base error by the rightfielder on a ball hit by Atkins. Then Atkins scored a moment later on a double by senior OF Amanda Lyons (Eastchester, N.Y.).

Down by one run, the Pride had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh, but Worrilow lined into a game-ending double play to the second baseman.

On Friday, SC will end its trip to Kissimmee with two games during the afternoon -- versus Framingham State at 3 pm, and versus Illinois Wesleyan at 5 pm.
