Brunswick, Me. -- November 12, 2011 -- Ryan O'Connell, a junior from Springfield College, has earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships next weekend. The Middleboro, Mass. native will compete at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the individual competition.
O'Connell led Springfield College to a 9th place finish as a team at Bowdoin College. There were 48 teams in the competition.
The top 10 teams were as follows: Williams 88, Middlebury 89, Bowdoin 160, Bates 161, Tufts 175, MIT 195, Brandeis 202, Amherst 205, Springfield 211, and Wesleyan 236.
For the Pride, O'Connell finished eighth as an individual with a time of 25:01.87. Behind him were grad student Brian Fuller (Ludlow, Mass.) in 33rd at 25:27.72, junior Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) in 36th at 25:28.65, junior Zach Pietras (Ludlow, Mass.) in 51st at 25:47.31, and senior Matthew Peabody (Portland, Me.) in 83rd at 26:28.68.
Just one place behind was junior Matthew Scully (Watertown, Conn.) in 84th at 26:29.20. Placing 99th was senior David Birdsall (Madison, Wisc).
There were 322 runners in today's competition.
