Stow, Mass. - October 5, 2013 - The Springfield College golf team opened up the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference Championship by posting a team score of 317 at Wedgewood Pines Golf Club.
Babson leads the field with 308 strokes and are followed by Elms and Springfield College with 317. Host Newbury is sitting in fourth with 334, followed by Daniel Webster College (354), Becker College (356) and Mitchell College (371).
A season ago, the Pride captured the NECC Championship and earned its first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Kyle DiFranco (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the Pride with a 74 on the day as he posted five birdies, the most among the 35 players in the field, and is currently third as an individual.
Last year's NECC Golfer of the Year, Adam Ziewacz (Simsbury, Conn.) posted an 80 and is tied for eighth. David Hashagen (Morris Plains, N.J.) totaled 10 pars in his round, the most of any player in the tournament, en route to an 81.
Mike Nowakowski (East Hampton, Conn.) registered an 82 to stand tied for 13th, while Joe Sobowicz (Farmington, Conn.) rounded out Springfield's scoring with an 86.
The difference in the team scoring has been Babson's ability to score on the par 5's, as the Beavers are a combined 11 under par. Springfield has gone one-under par is ranks second in par-five scoring.
