Dutter's Overtime Winner Lifts Men's Soccer Past Rival Wheaton, 3-2

Kevin Nowak Box Score

Norton, Mass. - September 24, 2011 - Freshman Zach Dutter scored his second goal of the season with 4:50 remaining in the second overtime to lift Springfield College to a 3-2 win over Wheaton College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field.

Classmate Kevin Nowak netted a pair of goals for the Pride, defeat the Lyons (3-4-2, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) for the second-straight year to remain unbeaten (5-0-3, 2-0-0 NEWMAC).

After Wheaton forced overtime with a pair of second-half goals to even the match at two, sophomore Michael Fowler sent a pass from the left side of the field to Dutter, who was at the right post and headed a shot past freshman goalkeeper Devin Delfino for the game-winner.

Springfield built a 2-0 lead behind two unassisted goals from Nowak 50 seconds apart in the first half. He opened the scoring at 14:50 when he walked into the box and slid a low shot inside the left post, then saw his cross pass seconds later knocked into the net by Delfino at 15:40. The shots were even at seven apiece through the opening 45 minutes. Trailing 2-0 at the half, Wheaton received a pair of goals from junior Will Nesbitt to even the match at two and force the extra sessions. Nesbitt’s first marker at 50:51 snapped a shutout streak of 515:51 for Springfield freshman goalkeeper Brett Bascom, and his second at 80:07 was his NEWMAC-leading seventh of the season and fifth in the last two matches. Junior Max Swanson sent Nesbitt in for his first goal to earn the assist while freshman Travis Blair played the ball to Nesbitt for his second goal.

Bascom shook off allowing the first two goals of his collegiate career and finished with six saves to improve to 2-0-3 on the season. Delfino recorded seven saves in defeat. Wheaton finished with a 25-15 edge in shots, due in large part to a 13-5 edge in the second half.

Springfield will return home from its four-game roadswing on Saturday when it hosts Coast Guard in another key league game beginning at 1:00 pm.
