Philadelphia, Pa. - February 2, 2014 - Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y.), Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) and Garrett DeSantis (Manalapan, N.J.) all collected first place finishes to help aid the Springfield College men’s gymnastics team over host Temple by a score of 400.250 – 397.450 on Sunday afternoon in McGonigle Hall, posting their highest overall score and first win of the 2014 season.
Zirna took the pommel horse by a long shot, placing first overall with a score of 14.000. The sophomore also won the all-around competition with a combined score of 79.700.
Ponce continued his early-season success and finished first place in the rings with a score of 14.450, followed in third place by senior Pat Hanley (Abington, Mass.) with a score of 14.300.
DeSantis earned a mark of 14.000 on the vault to lead Springfield, tying for first place with Temple's Brendan Williams for the top score of the day.
As for the floor routine, junior Sam Docherty (Uptown, Mass.) placed second with a score of 13.800 while classmate Andy Grabowski (Victor, N.Y) placed fifth with a score of 13.700.
Up next for the Pride will be Sunday, Feb. 9 when the Pride will host William & Mary at 1:00 p.m. in Blake Arena.
