Host Springfield Wins the Springfield February Women's Track & Field Meet Ahead of Williams and Hartford

Springfield, Mass. -- February 4, 2012 -- The Springfield College women's track & field team won its own Springfield February Track & Field Meet at the Springfield College Field House this afternoon by scoring 175 points. The Pride defeated eight other teams.

The final order of finish was as follows: Springfield (175), Williams (158), Hartford (154), Oneonta (132), Eastern Connecticut (52), Trinity (28), Stevens (23), Mount St. Mary's (16), and Manhattanville (1).

Winners for Springfield College included senior Kelly Curtis (Princeton , N.J.) in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.42 seconds, junior Laurie Jenkins (Columbia, Conn.) in the 60-meter dash in 8.02 seconds and in the 200 in 26.13 seconds, and sophomore Jenn Kapinos (Agawam, Mass.) in the 800 in 2:25.26.

Curtis also won the pentathlon with a total of 3048 points. She took two firsts -- in the 60-meter hurdles (9.37 seconds for 834 points) and in the shot put (37-5 for 621 points). She also took two seconds -- in the 800 (2:48.79 for 476 points) and in the long jump (16-6 3/4 for 551 points). In the other event, the high jump, she placed third in 4-9 for 566 points.

Others who performed well for the Pride included junior Bethany Young (Canajoharie, N.Y.) in the 60-meter hurdles. She placed third in 9.88 seconds. Junior Crystal Davis (Hartford, Conn.) took eighth in the 60-meters with a time of 8.37 seconds.

A trio of SC athletes went 3-4-7 in the 3000. They were freshman Nora Letendre (Northampton, Mass.) in third in 11:21.40, sophomore Erica Fisher (Chicopee, Mass.) in fourth in 11:22.26, and junior Katie Burns (Billerica, Mass.) in seventh in 11:28.35.

Finishing in second in the mile run was senior Alex Mustardo (Honeoye, N.Y.) with a time of 5:46.98. Also finishing in second in the 400 meters was senior Katie Schumann (Cromwell, Conn.) in 1:00.32. Another who finished second was senior Michelle Mirti (Pompton Plains, N.J.) in the 1000 in 3:10.33.

In the 4x400 meter relay, SC finished third with a time of 4:06.97.

Sophomore Gabrielle Williams (Rutland, Mass.) placed seventh in the 600 meters in 1:48.61.

In the weight throw, three from SC placed in the top eight. They were junior Colleen Brague (Smithfield, R.I.) in fourth in 12.98 meters, senior Michelle Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) in fifth in 12.78 meters, and sophomore Amber Judge (Orange, Mass.) in eighth in 11.77 meters.

In the shot put, Angelo took fourth (11.33m), Judge sixth (10.85m), and Curtis seventh (10.64m). Curts also placed fourth in the high jump in 1.45 meters. She tied sophomore Elizabeth Robataille (Ludlow, Mass.).

In the pole vault, junior Rhian Duggan (Northboro, Mass.) finished second in 3.05 meters, while Schumann was fifth in 2.75 meters.
