#10 Wrestling Fights Back with 24-18 Victory Over #30 TCNJ

Mike Fish Springfield, Mass. -- January 29, 2012 -- Number 10-ranked Springfield College fought back with nine points in the last two bouts to defeat 30th-ranked The College of New Jersey, 24-18, this afternoon at Blake Arena in a college wrestling match.

The rankings are according to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association's latest poll, released last week.

Two of the nation's very best were on display this afternoon. At the 165-pound weight class, Springfield junior Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) competed. Ranked #10 nationally as an individual, Longo pinned TCNJ freshman Ryan Riegert (Toms River, N.J.) at 3:24. At the time, that tied the match at 12-all.

Meanwhile, at 184-pounds, TCNJ senior Mike Denver (Bayville, N.J.) returned the favor. Ranked #1 in the country, Denver pinned junior Andrew Balina (Long Branch, N.J.) at 4:04. At the time, that gave TCNJ an 18-15 lead.

That left it up to the final two bouts. Junior Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), ranked #3 in New England, first defeated junior Dan Brill (Livingston, N.J.), 12-5. That tied it up at 18-all from a team perspective.

So, it all came down to the final match, winner take all. Senior heavyweight John Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.), also ranked #3 in New England, had the upper hand almost right from the start, eventually pinning freshman Michael Larcamp (Falls Church, Va.) in 1:53, providing the winning six-point margin.

Other winners for the Pride included sophomore Tom Casper (Bergenfield, N.J.) at 125, freshman Eric Hamrick (Collingswood, N.J.), ranked #3 in New England, at 149, and junior Mike Fish (Middletown, N.J.), ranked #1 in New England, at 174.

Missing from the SC line-up was junior Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) (injury), ranked #1 in New England and #8 in the nation, at 141 pounds. SC had to forfeit at that weight class.

There were three ties and five lead changes in today's match.
