Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.), Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Pat Hanley (Abington, Mass.) were all selected as National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics National Qualifiers by the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Committee. The national qualifier, which consists of two pre-qualifying sessions, will be conducted April 10.
The National Qualifier will be comprised of 12 teams, five all-around competitors (not from a selected team) and five individual event specialists (not from a selected team or have not already been selected in the all-around). There will be two competition sessions in the National Qualifier; at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Zirna, a sophomore Physician's Assistant major, qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the pommel horse with a score of 14.275 and parallel bars with a 13.800. Zirna will also be an alternate in the all-around competition, posting a qualifying score of 80.287.
Ponce will represent Springfield College on the rings with a qualifying score of 15.331, making his fourth trip to nationals. Hanley, a senior Applied Exercise Science major, also qualified on the rings with a score of 14.387.
Last year, Ponce was able to advance through the National Qualifier with a score of 15.200, placing him seventh and moving him into the National Championships meet. Here, Ponce scored a 14.850, finishing 18th out of 45 competitiors. Zirna qualified for the championships, but a 13.350 on the pommel horse and a 26th place finish kept him from advancing.
