Baseball Falls to Eastern Conn in Willimantic

Willimantic, Conn. -- April 7, 2010 -- The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team showed why it is the 13th-ranked team nationally as it defeated Springfield College, 28-4, today at the Mansfield Complex in a non-conference game. SC was held to five hits, and is now 9-12 on the season. Eastern is now 14-5.

ECSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, scoring four runs apiece in the first and second. The Pride cut it to 8-1 in the top of the fifth. But SC added three more in the bottom of that inning to make it 11-1. ECSU then scored eight more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 19-1. They added nine more in the eighth to reach the 28-run total. The Pride had scored two in the seventh, and added one more in the ninth.

Mark Grant took the loss for SC. He gave up eight runs, six earned, and nine hits. He also walked two and struck out one, and is now 1-2 on the season. Grant was followed to the mound by Greg Mayo, Daniel Jones, Cody Civello, and Brian Harris.

Bill Roveto, the second of three pitchers for ECSU, picked up the victory, and is now 2-0.

ECSU had 24 hits on the afternoon. Second baseman John Parke went 4-for-7, while Jim Schult and Tyler Turgeon had three hits apiece.

For Springfield, Matt Milano went for 2-for-2. Collecting one hit each were John Schmaltz, Mike Robilotto, and Lou Nucci.

On Thursday, SC will return to conference play, hosting Babson at 3:30 pm.
