Springfield, Mass. - March 29, 2011 - The Springfield College baseball team let a 3-0 lead slip away as Babson College rallied for a 6-3 win at Berry Allen Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.
The Beavers capitizlied on four unearned runs in the eighth inning to improve to 14-4, 6-2 in league play. The Pride fall to 6-9, 0-5 in conference games.
Springfield finished with six hits in the contest, two of which came off the bat of John Schmaltz, who along with teammate Louie Nucci, each produced a RBI for the hosts. Starter James Christensen last 6.1 innings, giving up two earned runs of four hits while striking out four and walking two. Darryl Smith was charged with the loss as in 2/3's of an inning, he gave up four unearned runs off two hits while committing a pair of errors.
Michael Bortolotti fired a complete game for the Beavers, scattering six hits while giving up three unearned runs and striking out four. Babson totaled seven hits in the win as Chris Kuchar went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Conor Kortmann tallied two RBI and Dave Ahern added an RBI single.
The Pride scored all three of its runs in the second inning as it took advantage of a pair of Babson errors. Nucci singled home Mike McGowan, who led off the inning reaching on an error. Karl Quist would come around to score from second after another Babson miscue, and Schmaltz's single drove in Nucci for the Pride's last run of the game.
Babson began to chip away with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kortmann, which plated Chris Warren, who led off the inning with a single. The Beavers would cut the lead to one in the seventh after Kortmann ripped an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Kuchar.
The game came unraveled in the eighth as Springfield committed a pair of errors and Babson scratched out three hits en route to four runs. After Corey Highfield cracked a leadoff single, Trevor Boyce reached on a Pride error, putting runners on second and third. Ahern calmly stepped up and poked a ball into left field, tying the contest at three. Springfield committed a two-run error on the following play as Babson took the lead for good after Boyce and Ahern crossed the plate. Kuchar's single to right field provided Babson its final run as Warren scored for the second time in the afternoon.
The Pride will battle the Beavers once again on Wednesday when it hits the road for a single conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
