Springfield, Mass. -- February 20, 2010 -- Joe Grippi at 133 pounds and John Archambeau at 157 pounds have advanced to a final four position, and five others are also still alive in the wrestle-backs as the Springfield College wrestling team is currently in fourth place with 70.5 points after Day One of the New England Wrestling Association Championships at nearby Western New England College.
Day Two of action begins Sunday at 9:30 am.
The seven SC wrestlers who have advanced this far have assured themselves of placing within the Top Six in their respective weights and therefore have earned All-New England honors.
Grippi, a freshman from Bedford Hills, N.Y., and Archambeau, a junior from Ludlow, Mass., have yet to lose entering Sunday's competition at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively.
The other advancing members of the Pride, who have all reached Round 5-C, include freshman Michael Rose (Patterson, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, junior Blaze Chatham (Walkill, N.Y.) at 141, sophomore Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) at 149, freshman Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) at 197, and junior Ron Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) at heavyweight.
In terms of team scoring through the first day of competition, Williams, the top-ranked team in New England Division III, is in first place with 81.5 points, followed by Wesleyan (74), Johnson & Wales (72.5), Springfield (70.5), Southern Maine (64.5), Bridgewater State (63.5), Rhode Island College (56.5), Roger Williams (41), Plymouth State (34.5), Trinity (31.5), host WNEC (29.5), WPI (21), Coast Guard (15), and Norwich (2.5).
A total of 10 individual champions will be crowned on Sunday. Those 10 will automatically qualify to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 5-6. Additionally, several "wild card" individuals will be chosen to also compete in the NCAA's by the NEWA coaches late Sunday night.
