Boston, Mass. - November 3, 2013 - The Springfield College men's cross country team competed in the 2013 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Park, placing seventh overall in the competition.
MIT, which was a unanimous choice to repeat in the preseason coaches’ poll, collected 18 points to top Coast Guard Academy, which finished second with 44 points. WPI came in third with 96 points and was followed by Babson College in fourth-place with 121 points, and Clark University in fifth with 143 points. Wheaton College came in sixth, followed by Springfield College in seventh, and league-newcomer Emerson College, which finished eighth.
Erich Voelker (Albany, N.Y.) was the Pride's top finisher in the race, crossing the finish line with a time of 27:07.25 to place 38th, while Springfield's next fastest runner in the race was Joe Geurds (Albany, N.Y.), who posted a 27:56.08 to take 54th.
Jacob Simons (Naugatuck, Conn.) took 57th after running a 28:09.52, and teammate Corey Hamel (Methuen, Mass.) was right behind him in 58th with a 28:09.75.
Springfield's fifth runner proved to be Scott Bushey (Hebron, Conn.) who clocked in 62nd in 28:20.79.
Next weekend, the Pride will race in the at the ECAC Division III Championships.
