Tufts Downs Field Hockey, 4-0, in NCAA Tournament Second Round

Medford, Mass. - November 15, 2008 - The fourth-ranked Tufts University field hockey team scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 win over Springfield College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday at Bello Field.

Tufts, which improved to 17-1 overall, finished the game with a 44-4 edge in shots and 29-2 advantage in penalty corners. The Jumbos advance to the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday, when they will play either The College of New Jersey or Christopher Newport University at 1:00 on Bello. Springfield, the NEWMAC champion who won a first-round game over Keene State, ended their season with a 16-7 record.

After over 25 minutes of scoreless play, the Jumbos scored twice in a one-minute span to take control of the game. Sophomore Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) scored off an assist from junior Margi Scholtes (Grosse Pointe, MI) at 26:02 and then assisted on a goal by classmate Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) at 27:01.

The Jumbos went into halftime with a 17-3 margin in shots and 8-2 in penalty corners. Springfield first-year goalkeeper Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) had seven first-half saves. Pride senior Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) had the visitor’s lone shot on goal in the first half, which was saved by Tufts first-year goalie Marianna Zak (Concord, MA).

Into the second half, Tufts continued to control the pace of the game. Junior Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY) pushed the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal 17 minutes into the second half. Tufts then scored its third goal of the game off a penalty corner opportunity with less than six minutes remaining when sophomore Tess Guttadauro (Carlisle, MA) tapped in a open shot with an assist to classmate Irene Lewnard (Westford, MA).

McCarthy finished with 15 saves in a solid performance for the Pride.
